Professional Surgical Insight
When rebuilding the Ford 8000/9000 series Dual Power transmission, precise shimming of the planetary gear set (Part 4, Chapter 1) is absolutely critical to obtain a free play of 0.004" to 0.020"; failure to achieve this tolerance will result in immediate clutch pack destruction. When servicing the hydrostatic steering motor (Part 7, Chapter 2), the metering element rotor and stator must be kept as a matched set, and the seven special end cover bolts must be sequentially torqued strictly to 15-19 lbs. ft. to prevent irreversible damage to the lapped surfaces. When fitting new piston rings (Part 1, Chapter 1), note that the 8600/9600 series utilizes a "keystone" tapered top compression ring which must be installed with extreme care to avoid snapping the lands. Always utilize the specified Universal Clutch Fixtures (SW-510 or SW-12) when adjusting the clutch release levers to ensure a perfectly parallel engagement face.
